The Cadence Caller is an autobiographical work based on my time in the U.S. NAVY. Immediately after high school I joined to get money for college through the “New G.I. Bill”. I was the cadence caller in my boot camp company and based the piece on the texts and rhythms of these cadences. It’s a funny and at times painful coming of age story told in vignettes that represent the eight weeks of U.S. Navy boot camp.

This piece has had many manifestations and actually started in 1997 at the 1st NY International Fringe Festival. Other performers/collaborators were, Alma Largey, Steven Spraragen, Tenjin Ikeda, Tony Silva and most recently Joe Alter, Jakey Toor and Jolena Wilson.

This review is from the 1999 version performed at what is now BAX (Brooklyn Arts Exchange)
